I see the shoes shell script does set LD_LIBRARY_PATH:
    REALPATH=`readlink -f $0`

    APPPATH="${REALPATH%/*}"
    if [ "$APPPATH" = "shoes" ]; then
      APPPATH="."
    fi
    if [ "$APPPATH" = "." ]; then
      APPPATH=`pwd`
    fi

    ...

    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$APPPATH $APPPATH/shoes-bin "$@"

Also try to run it like:

$ bash -x /usr/local/shoes/shoes

and/or

$ cd /usr/local/shoes
$ bash -x ./shoes
