You could also use a here doc and avoid having to escape any character 
inside the string:

str = <<'LOTS_OF_SYMBOLS'
[A-Za-z\d!#$%&'*+-/=?^_`{|}~]
LOTS_OF_SYMBOLS

puts str.chomp

--output:--
[A-Za-z\d!#$%&'*+-/=?^_`{|}~]
