It's also possible to escape a newline:

name_format = /\A[A-Za-z\d\
\!\#\$\%\&\'\*\+\-\/\=\?\^\_\`\{\|\}\~]\z/x

but then you can't indent the second line or else your regex will 
contain a bunch of spaces.
