I used the installer for 1.6, but there's no 1.7 installer version
available, so I had to build/compile it from the source code.

Is build the same as compile?  Er, perhaps building includes linking and
stuff, whereas compiling might not.  Colloquially they're close enough for
most purposes (i.e., run make, etc., get binary executable).
