It's not a short answer, and right now I don't have time to present a good example (I'm heading out of town). But part of the answer is that a 3-D object's shape is a function of the shape's material properties and the other sources of light in the scene. You can see part of what I'm referring to in the glviewer.rb example program that comes with FXRuby. Switch to the "Colors" notebook tab and play around with some of the scene's color settings (especially "Light Amb." and "Light Diff.") to see how it affects the colors of the objects in the scene. But for the real story about OpenGL's lighting and color model you're really going to need to go the source, namely the "red book" (the OpenGL Programming Guide, latest ed.) For free information (possibly good enough to get started with) check the OpenGL web site at http://www.opengl.org. Hope this helps, Lyle
