Looking at the models I've seen in the stockmarket/insurance world, computing power or the size of datasets is not the real issue at all. The difficulty lies two-pars: 1) interfacing with all the legacy backend (sic!). 2) sound leading-edge, statistical/mathematical modelling. Smalltalk and Lisp are traditionally quite popular esp. in the finance world as they help to quickly adapt to new financial products. Ruby fits in there, too. The finance market is more inventive than I thought a few years ago. Make a new finance product and know how to price it better than the competition and you are in game.
