In any case, in the actual live script (as opposed to the test script) I did the same comparison of: $recs[ "#{$seed_pre}.#{$seed_post}.#{$seed}.#{sgen}".freeze ] = $iarr $recs[ "#{$seed_pre}#{$seed_post}#{$seed}#{sgen}".to_i.freeze ] = $iarr and unfortunately there was no real difference because of the amount of other processing that happens inside the loops . .
