I don't know why, but using [] rather than #scan does the work:

str = "aaaDDDbDDDcDDDgHHyHjHJkkjUUh"
arr = str[ /([A-Z])\1{2}([a-z])\1{3}/ ]
print arr

=> "DDDbDDD"
