This problem goes away if you use Ruby Version Manager (rvm).  Wayne Seguin
maintains the tool with a set of Rubies that includes latest patch releases
of MRI 1.8.6, 1.8.7, 1.9.1, 1.9.2 as well as alternative interpreters.
