Ah, sorry for the late response, I'm not on ruby-talk and it took me
this long to find the thread on the web.  Please Cc: me in future
discussion about this.

Anyway, I'm not sure about the exact versions, but I known the mentioned
functions have been around for a long time.  The customization things,
for example were there already in XEmacs 19, which was 4+ years ago.  I
think it's perfectly safe to apply the patch.
