This looks to me like a simple back-reference, no?

i.e.: /(ab*c+d)XXX(\1)/

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I don't understand the ?*1
syntax, or what it's supposed to accomplish.  I'm sure I'm missing
something basic here.  =\
