I'll answer my own question (sort of ...).  This configuration for
desktop seems to work:

desktop = ExternalBallistics.new do
  #self.a = 5.0
  #self.b = 3.0
  #self.c = 1.0

 desktop.a = 5.0
 desktop.b = 3.0
 desktop.c = 1.0

end


but I don't understand the authors assignment of self.a, self.b, self.c,
especially in light of the fact that it doesn't work.  If anyone can
share any insight, I'd appreciate it.
