Direct exponentiation is very inefficient except for large values. It is almost always better to use straightforward multiplication when your powers are reasonably small. Other than this I can't think of any way to improve performance short of dropping to C, and even there I think the performance improvement you'll get would be marginal. Have you tried profiling your code?
