I compiled the current distribution on AIX 4.3.3 a couple of weeks ago.
Using gcc, it didn't work at first, but I found a couple of modules that
used assert macros and there was some glitch with a link name.  I added
#define NDEBUG 1 to them and it worked fine.  On a second pass, I would
try setting an environment variable 
export NDEBUG=1
first.
