From: ptkwt@...1.aracnet.com (Phil Tomson) Date: 2002-04-06T10:35:12+09:00 Subject: Etc module not available in Ruby on Win (non cygwin) This is sort of an FYI and a "How can we replace the missing functionality?" post. Someone was using TaskMaster on Win2k with Ruby compiled with MSVC and they were getting error messages from the line that require'd 'etc'. So we figured out that there is no Etc module in the Windows version of Ruby (unless you use cygwin). I was using Etc.getlogin, but it won't work on Win Ruby. Any ideas for replacing the missing Etc module on Windows? (or maybe better yet, maybe a module called WinSysInfo or some such since most of the functions in Etc don't make sense in a Windows environment). Or maybe even a SysInfo module that has a set of methods that get mapped to the correct underlying OS calls depending on which OS you're running on. On Unix: SysInfo.getlogin -> Etc.getlogin On Windows: SysInfo.getlogin -> Win32API(...whatever will give us the current login...) Other things like free disk space, processor info, etc could be in SysInfo. Other ideas? Phil
