Subject: trans string into array

a=[1,2,3]
=> [1, 2, 3]
irb(main):008:0> b=[4,5,6]
=> [4, 5, 6]
irb(main):009:0> a[1]+b
TypeError: Array can't be coerced into Fixnum
from (irb):9:in `+'
from (irb):9
from :0
irb(main):010:0> a[1].to_a+b
(irb):10: warning: default `to_a' will be obsolete
=> [2, 4, 5, 6]

is there better way to  change string into array?
a[1].to_a will be obsolere
