Re: TextPad replacement for Linux?

I am a big vim fan, and I evangelize it all the time, but the truth of
the matter is that if you want a good editor then you should use either
vim or emacs.  They are both very powerful editors that were developed
under two different philosophies.

I obviously like vim better, but if big, bloated, oversized binaries are
not that big a deal, then try emacs.  If you like frequent doctors visits
due to carpal tunnel syndrome from typing <c-x><m-q><s-3><c-~>... then
emacs is for you.  If you really want to learn lisp, then by all means
use emacs. (enjoy (you emacs))!  Otherwise go for vim.  It is a text
editor plain and simple.  You want to run a ruby interpreter then use
irb, that is what it does, you want to edit text, use vim that is what
it does.  If you want to walk the dog, wash the dishes, surf the web,
use emacs, those are but a small sampling of the power you never knew
you wanted until you got emacsOS.

But really, use whichever editor works best for you.  There are people
that swear by emacs, and love it.  I don't understand that, but then
again they don't understand why I like vim.

By the way, I'm open to flaming... after all I invited it... :)

I would recommend that whatever editor you use, stick with it and learn
it well.  I would also suggest that you try a few editors for a few
weeks and use whichever you like the best.  I did, and I went with vim.
Results may be different for everyone.  Anyway, if you need help with
vim you can also check out #vim on irc.openprojects.net, for emacs I
guess you can do the same at #emacs.
