I wanted a single editor that: Supported syntax highlighting Was extensible with scripts and macros Had wide-spread support (i.e., lots of help on the web) Loaded and ran fast Could be found on almost every computer Had a gradual learning curve I went for Vi/Vim. I tried emacs, too hard :) Vi was on every machine I encountered at my last job. (Not sure if Solaris ships with emacs.) Vim 6 supports Ruby scripts.
