if you want a GUI based editor but do not want vim or (X)Emacs
I can recommend jedit (www.jedit.org)
it is open source and very powerful
it is written complety in java (so it is a bit slower than vim because
Swing on linux is not so fast) but it is fast enough.
support ruby syntax highlighting.
