You could use this approach:

 >> rx = /^(?=.{5,10}$)\w+$/
=> /^(?=.{5,10}$)\w+$/
 >> rx =~ "foo"
=> nil
 >> rx =~ "foo!bar"
=> nil
 >> rx =~ "fooibar"
=> 0
 >> rx =~ "fooibarbazwhupple"
=> nil
