Or better yet, how > about a more modernized GUI based editor written with FoxRuby. That > would rule!! > (I'm the OP of this thread). I have no idea that other people have the same desire. However, from reading past postings and inner understanding, I realise that what emacs great is not the editor itself, but rather the wealth of library that comes with it. Many emacs-like editor are in existence: jed, demacs, etc designed to fill various needs (e.g. demacs for space-constrained people). The implementation of an emacs-like editor (buffers, minibuffer, extensible, etc) is pretty straight forward as the abundance of emacs-look-alike shows. However, none of them supports the elisp library that comes with emacs. There is no Gnus, no calendar, no dairy, no supercite, etc. So another emacs-like editor is pretty much redundant. So, as one of the past posters in December 2000 said, as long as there is no elisp to ruby translator, remacs will be just a toy. Personally, my greatest need for emacs is threading support. The lack of threading support in emacs and xemacs is one of my biggest gripe about emacs (emacs unresponsive while checking email or opening up HTML mail). One that is solvable only by a major overhaul of the emacs engine (as I was told by a developer of xemacs). So, now, 1 1/2 years after the last time this issue was brought up, is there any breakthrough in elisp->ruby converter? YS.
