Umm... mine do:

     FAST dave[tmp/hhff 15:36:51] ls -ld .
     drwxr-xr-x   2 dave     dave         1024 Apr  2 15:36 .
     FAST dave[tmp/hhff 15:36:54] chmod 123 .
     FAST dave[tmp/hhff 15:37:03] ls -ld .   
     d--x-w--wx   2 dave     dave         1024 Apr  2 15:36 .
     FAST dave[tmp/hhff 15:38:02] grep wombat .
     grep: .: Permission denied
