What made you take a "second glance" > at ruby? I started with Perl, and with a disdain for anything OO. Then I saw the light when a friend coaxed me into giving Python a try and it made the world of object-oriented programming more accessible and friendly. Ruby goes even further in that direction by making extending classes and objects tremendously simple. I've helped a few friends wrap their minds around object-oriented programming(the local community colleges use C++ for that purpose and the results are not pretty). I started with Python, and that was good, but the concept was still mired in the details of implementing it. Ruby eliminated that obstacle, allowing me to completely separate explanation of theory from the practical application of it.
