Directly answering the latter question  there was a similar thread a
little more then a year ago (the arguments were pretty much the same
back than).  Either check out the archives [ruby-talk:12329] on blade
or search  comp.lang.ruby with the key words  `Math package'
(and/or `sin' and/or `abs' if you like) on Google-news.
