Then this will work:

ruby-1.8.6-p399 > "".method(:length).inspect.match(/#([^#]*)>/)[1]
 => "length"

or:

class Method
  def name
    inspect.match(/#([^#]*)>/)[1]
  end
end

ruby-1.8.6-p399 > "".method(:length).name
 => "length"
