From: james@... Date: 2002-04-02T02:52:20+09:00 Subject: Sun Microsystems Buys Rights to Ruby I'm surprised nobody in the list has mentioned this. I read in a ZDNet newsletter thing that Sun decided Ruby was "almost as well designed" as Java(tm), and negotiated a deal to buy the rights to Ruby. Sun reps said that Ruby would be modified to have "built-in" J2EE compliance; Sun Ruby 2.0 would require that all Ruby apps be EJBs. Oh, and they also own the rights to the phrases "The Ruby Way(tm)" and "Principle of Least Surprise(tm)." On the bright side, there will be a Ruby VM; however, all dynamic behavior (like adding methods to classes at runtime, or creating variables without a type declaration) will be eliminated, as Sun believes this only confuses developers. Anyway, enjoy the rest of this fine first day of April. James
