It seems like you're doing a good job; most of the things that feel "broken" to me sound like they will be fixed in the next version. The only other suggestion I have is this: make the "ruby" package install the whole shebang: irb, ri, rdoc, libwhatever, rubygems... Then you could have a "ruby-minimal" package for the tiny minority of people doing embedded systems work in ruby. Doing this would save a great deal of newbie frustration, and cut down on complaints here and elsewhere. Software in general is frustrating, and frustrated people tend to be rude.
