I was adding the readers to testunit itself until it dawned on me to
simply extend TestResult within bulktestrunner.rb, viz,

 module Test
  module Unit

   class TestResult
    attr_reader :errors, :failures
   end

   module UI
    module Console
     [bulktestrunner stuff]
    end
   end

  end
 end
