Well, if you install the 'ri' package in Ubuntu it installs a symbolic
link for ri that points to ri1.8.  If you don't want to do that, you
could always make the symbolic link yourself:

sudo ln -s `which ri1.8` /usr/local/bin/ri
(note those are backticks, not quotes)
