Hi Kaye Visual BASIC is a IDE(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_development_environment). The compiler, that "translates" the sourcecode into machine code, is integrated. when you download ruby, there is only the interpreter(a thing similar to the compiler), but the IDE is an extra application.
