Try this way?:

class Object
  def hexid
    Object.instance_method(:inspect).bind(self).call[/:(.*?)[> ]/,1]
  end
end

Ugly, but seems like it ought to be fairly universal. Well, it won't
work with BlankSlate/BasicObject, but other than that....
