Ah I see now, this is just what's called "poetry mode" - method calls 
without parentheses around the argument list

Time.now - Time.now   => Time.now() - Time.now()

Time.now -Time.now    => Time.now(-Time.now())

Similarly,

Time.now - 1          => Time.now() - 1
Time.now -1           => Time.now(-1)
