Did you load rubygems?
 
Have you tried using:

  require 'rubygems'

or better:

  ruby -rubygems your_script.rb

Adding /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems to you LOAD_PATH won't help you, as Rubygems manages the LOAD_PATH itself (and in a different way).
