If you're just looking to use COM objects from Ruby, it's simple:

require 'win32ole'

ie = WIN32OLE.new('InternetExplorer.Application')
ie.visible = true
ie.gohome
 
... I use it all the time even with custom Windows Scripting Components --
vbscript or jscript packaged up as a COM object.
