I guess bigdecimal should be the answer

=> 217
>> require 'bigdecimal'
=> true
>> a = BigDecimal("2.175")
=> #<BigDecimal:1014bd230,'0.2175E1',8(8)>
>> (a*100).round.to_s
=> "0.218E3"
