Clarification: apt-get upgrade won't help, because 4.4.1 is still the 
leading version in the ubuntu karmic (9.10) repositories, even if you 
include backports. The alternative is:

   apt-get install gcc-4.3

And then set CC="gcc-4.3" (or use update-alternatives).
