Subject: IO.popen not redirecting stdout?

Isn't the code below supposed to never show anything?


data = File.open('text.gz') {|f| f.read}

IO.popen('gzip -d', 'w') do |gzip|
  gzip.write data
end


Instead, it outputs the uncompressed content of text.gz to the console
(I tried with -dc as well).  But doesn't popen redirect stdout?  

I'm sure I'm missing something trivial, but what?
