I remember some bug in 1.6.6 was fixed old days.  That is the bug
causing the debugger falsely catching internal exception which is
used, for example, for type conversion.

For original poster, I recommend to update ruby to 1.6.7 or later.

# 1.6.7 has its own bug, so temporarily giving up to use debugger and
# waiting for release of 1.6.8 may be a good choice too :-)
