I used to write a lot of code that was just fighting the type system. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with letting the programmer declare a type when she wants and having the compiler use that information to perform compile time checks. It catches typos and instances where the you use a perfectly reasonable method name that doesn't happen to be defined for the receiver. That's something I would like to see in Ruby. It's not as either/or as the article makes it appear. Some of the comments on the article make this point. -- Nature will bear the closest inspection.
