I'm not sure, but Judy (http://judy.sourceforge.net/) and it's Ruby 
bindings (http://rjudy.sourceforge.net/) seem to be another candidate 
for efficient hash implementations. I tried purple 
(http://purple.rubyforge.org/), which is built upon Judy, too.
