As a little off topic:

You should also read about YAML:
http://www.ruby-doc.org/core/classes/YAML.html.

I don't really know about marshalling since i serialize all my data
with YAML. It's human readable and automatically handles
dumping and loading your ruby objects.
All you need is:

    c = Car.new
    dumped = c.to_yaml
    c = file.open('dumpfile') { |f| YAML::load(f) }
