At the command line:

C:\>echo %gem_home%
"C:\Documents and Settings\gthiesfeld\.gem\ruby\1.9.1"

if the variable isn't set, it will actually return %gem_home%

C:\>echo %gem_home%
%gem_home%

or your can use the set command:

C:\>set gem
GEM_HOME="C:\Documents and Settings\gthiesfeld\.gem\ruby\1.9.1"
