Sorry I wasn't clear enough.  What I was driving at was that although
Ruby obviously provides extensive support for Kanji, source is written
in 7-bit ASCII (at least according to pickaxe, is there any version of
Ruby with source as Japanese, or any other language for that matter)? 
The only language I've personally seen like this was a variant of
Smalltalk for Chinese).

I am curious about it as a larger issue, many languages I've seen were
written outside of english-speaking countries, and a large amount of
them seem to use english words for syntax.  Then again I can only read
english and french so I'm no authority.  Maybe practical considerations
were the main reason for this early on, but why now, and is this
starting to change?
