end
def a

end

def foo(x=nil)
  m(x)
end
foo
puts "The result is #{a.inspect}"   # shows nil

# prog2.rb
def m(a=nil)
  @a = a || 123
end
def a
  @a
end

def foo(x=nil)
  m(x)
end
foo
puts "The result is #{a.inspect}"   # shows 123
