I'm running Mandrake 8.1, a distant relative of RH, but from one of the
7.x versions, not 6.x.  Somewhere along the line they made the switch
from XFree86 3.3.x to 4.x, which is significant because they did a major
shakedown, so I'm working from memory here.

First of all, I'm assuming you meant 386 laptop literally, not as an
architecture indicator.  If that's the case, disk space is probably at a
premium and maybe you didn't install XFree86-devel?
If the package name is the RH package name was the same for 3.3.x try:
rpm -q XFree86-devel

If it's not installed, that's probably the package you need to build
Ruby.  Maybe it would be a better idea to compile Ruby on a faster
system and one where disk space wasn't so tight?

If you're sure that you have these libs installed despite what rpm says
try:
ldconfig -v | grep X11
tell us what you get.

Also why mess with anything?  Why not start afresh, run './configure',
then 'make' and see if it compiles with that first (after you deal with
the above) to make sure it's not something you've done.  I haven't ever
seen a statically-linked Ruby distributions' size, but I would imagine
it's significantly larger installed, and it sounds like you're only
missing one library.  I can't remember ever not having XFree86-devel
installed, but I think you can install it just for the build, them
remove it afterwards.  The man reason for linking statically might be to
remove Tk support, but you said you had that installed.
