Hrm.  ffi uses dlopen for loading the dynamic library.  The man page for
dlopen under the searching section indicates that it searches
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH, then DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH.

So either *should* work (though I haven't tried).
