NameError isn't StandardError in 1.6, and rescue without
particular exception type just catch StandardError and its
subclasses.

  begin
     puts doc.make
  rescue StandardError, NameError
     print "Content-type: text/plain\n\n"
     puts 'myself speaking: ' +$!
  end
