Subject: where to start? (parted frontend)

Hi, guys.
I've searched a bit for exercises for make pratice in ruby, and
the most valuable thing I have found was the suggestion to start
a project and just develop.

Fine.

But I still need a little hint just to know from WHERE to start,
so here is my idea.

I'd like to write a frontend for parted, a GNU tool for resizing, 
moving, and bla bla to partitions in various filesystems.
Ok, the idea is to layerize the front-end: to create a class, or
a set of classes, for reading parted output and passing it to an 
higher level, and another one for reading from the upper level 
and sending input to parted.
The upper level should be gtk in X or ncurses for a console.

Ok. Where I can start to write these classes ? What I can read, where
I have to focus my attention?
