there's another form for case.
try this (untested),

  arg = ARGV[0]
  case
  when ARGV.size > 1
     abort "too many args ;-)"
  when /^os$/ =~ arg
     sym = arg.downcase
  else
     abort "ERROR: invalid arg #{arg}"
  end
