Frankly, I find this bit still quite convoluted, especially because of 
the assignment in "unless".  How about:

arg = ARGV.shift || 'os'
abort "ERROR:..." unless /\Aos\z/i =~ arg
abort "ERROR: multiple..." unless ARGV.empty?
